1794 S-50, B-43 Cent, VF20
Workhorse Closed Wreath Reverse
1794 1C Head of 1794 VF20 NGC. S-50, B-43, High R.5. Our EAC
Grade Fine 12. Ex: Mervis Collection. Breen Die State II, the
obverse die is lapped but the late state die crack is absent. The
Closed Wreath reverse was a workhorse die used with six different
obverse dies, the varieties identified as S-49 through S-54.
Current rarity ratings for the six varieties suggests that 1000 to
2000 examples survive from the reverse die. However, only 30 to 35
of those are from the S-50 dies. Only 10 of the survivors grade
finer than this example. Steel-brown surfaces show faint bluish
overtones with light roughness on both sides, showing a minuscule
reverse rim bruise at 12 o'clock.Ex: Tom Reynolds (4/2012); Greg Hannigan.
