Description

Beautifully Toned 1873 Seated Dollar, PR64 Cameo

1873 $1 PR64 Cameo NGC. The Mint Act of 1873 abolished the circulating silver dollar in favor of the Trade dollar, an action deemed the "Crime of '73" by silver mining interests enriched by the production of this largest of all U.S. silver coins. Adding insult to injury, in 1874 Congress demonetized silver dollars, revoking their legal tender status. Within this milieu of competing and factious political interests 600 proof Seated Liberty dollars were minted in 1873, the lowest total since 1869. The present coin is a beautiful representative of the last year of the type. Blue and turquoise accents at the rim frame soft plum and apricot toning that transitions to dove-gray at the obverse center. The reverse offers blue, turquoise, apricot and plum toning with a bright, untoned central circle. Census: 18 in 64 Cameo, 5 finer (8/08).(Registry values: N2998)
