Fantastic MS62 1895-O Dollar

1895-O $1 MS62 PCGS. While the 1895-O has always been something of a darling among Morgan dollar enthusiasts, particularly in higher grades, enough circulated examples have been through the marketplace that collectors have been able to assume its ready availability in almost all non-Mint State grades. As noted by Q. David Bowers in his A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, "There are scads of high EF and AU coins around, indicating that many 1895-O dollars must have been in circulation for only a short time ... "
Also noteworthy is that almost all of the 1895-O dollars were paid out, with virtually none left to languish in Treasury vaults, unlike the majority of Morgan dollar issues. In the Guide Book, Bowers further notes: "The 1895-O emerged as the single circulation-strike variety that is not known to have been a part of any Treasury releases via bags." He later clarifies that he has " ... found no account or even a rumor of any [1895-O dollars] being a part of the 1962 through 1964 Treasury release."
With so many survivors showing evidence of circulation, Mint State representatives of this issue are treasures, and the present coin is no exception. The strike is surprisingly bold, with individual feathers showing on the eagle's breast, and the highly lustrous surfaces show only occasional hints of golden patina. While an abrasion at Liberty's upper hair and smaller, scattered marks preclude Select status, the overall eye appeal remains high. An excellent choice for the Morgan dollar aficionado.
