Description

(1670-75) St. Patrick Halfpenny, XF45
Rare Vlack 4-E Variety

(1670-75) 1/2 P St. Patrick Halfpenny XF45 PCGS Secure. Vlack 4-E, Breen-204, W-11540. This rare St. Patrick halfpenny variety has small letters on both the obverse and reverse. These curious coppers are attributed to Mark Newby of Dublin who emigrated to New Jersey (then West Jersey) in 1681. Among other things, Newby brought a quantity of St. Patrick halfpennies and supposedly convinced the state legislature to accept the coins for small transactions. Research is ongoing as to the relationship and origin of the farthings and halfpennies. This chocolate-brown piece is smooth with strong devices. The brass plug is on the upper right portion of the crown. A nice addition to any Colonial assemblage. Listed on page 53 of the 2019 Guide Book. Population: 1 in 45, 1 finer (6/18).

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# AUAS, PCGS# 46, Greysheet# 408)
