(1790) Washington Before Boston Medal
Bronze, Original Paris Mint Dies
MS62 Brown, Baker-47B

(1790) Washington Before Boston Medal, Bronze, Original, MS62 Brown NGC. Baker-47B, Betts-542, Julian MI-1b, GW-09-P1. 68 mm. Struck at the Paris Mint from dies engraved by Pierre-Simon-Benjamin Duvivier. The first entry in the Comitia Americana series, the Washington Before Boston medal is arguably best known among all Washington medals. It is positioned #2 in the 100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens reference, trailing only the Libertas Americana medal. In March 1776, the British evacuated Boston following a year's occupation, after General Washington directed the installation of cannon at Dorchester Heights, overlooking Boston. The Continental Congress promptly awarded a gold medal to Washington. The original dies also struck examples in silver and bronze. The present piece is mahogany-brown with blushes of steel-blue. Well struck and desirable.
