Description
1793 Lettered Edge Wreath Cent, MS62 Brown
The Finest Known S-11b, B-16b
Noyes 1991 Plate Coin
1793 1C Wreath, Lettered Edge, S-11b, B-16b, R.4, MS62 Brown
PCGS. CAC. Ex: Naftzger-Reynolds. Breen Die State III, showing
strong die clashing on the obverse and light clashmarks on the
reverse. Two Lettered Edge Wreath cents were produced after all of
the Vine and Bars Edge coins. The Sheldon-11b offered here has two
leaves following DOLLAR on the edge while the more plentiful S-11c
has a single leaf after DOLLAR. Del Bland and Bill Noyes agree that
this piece grades AU50, and they also agree that it is the finest
known 1793 S-11b Wreath cent. Following this piece in the Condition
Census are two coins that grade XF, and just over a dozen coins in
the VF grade range.A small, dark toning spot over the right side of the B in LIBERTY identifies this lustrous medium brown cent that exhibits lighter chocolate-brown and darker bluish-steel toning. Trivial planchet flakes on Liberty's cheek will also aid identification. This is an exceptional cent that will be at home among the finest surviving 18th century large cents. With a provenance dating to the early 20th century, this piece is making its second auction appearance in its history. Our EAC grade AU50. PCGS Lettered Edge Population: 2 in 62 Brown, 3 finer. PCGS S-11b Population: 1 in 62 Brown, 0 finer (11/21).
Ex: Dr. Thomas Hall; Colonel James W. Ellsworth (3/1923); Wayte Raymond; Virgil M. Brand (Reportedly from the Brand estate, but not verifiable by examination of the Brand journals); David Proskey; Henry C. Hines; Dr. William H. Sheldon (4/19/1972); R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (2/23/1992); Eric Streiner; Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz (7/10/1992); Dennis Mendelson (10/1992); Thomas D. Reynolds (Goldberg Auctions, 1/2016), lot 7.
