Description

1787 Maris 35-J New Jersey Copper, VF35
Bold Undertype on Reverse

1787 COPPER New Jersey Copper, First 7 over 8 VF35 NGC. Maris 35-J, R.6. The undertype is clearly visible on the shield, and while not specifically identified, appears to be an English halfpence, like others of the same variety. This example shows incredible detail, with the sharpness close to finest known for the variety. The surfaces are dark ebony-green, with slight roughness on each side, but there are no serious imperfections. A sensational piece that will keep the Colonial specialist occupied to specifically identify the undertype. The reverse die is rotated about 35 degrees clockwise, as usual for the die marriage. Listed on page 66 of the 2012 Guide Book.
