Description

1783 Betts-608 Silver Medal, PR64
Peace of Versailles

1783 Medal Peace of Versailles Medal, Betts-608, Silver, PR64 NGC. The obverse depicts Louis XVI pointing to a shield bearing America's 13 bars hung by Liberty on a pillar, while the reverse shows Athena holding a spear growing into an olive tree and a ribbon linking the shields of France, Britain, Spain, and Holland. The Peace of Versailles, ending the Revolutionary War, was signed on September 3, 1783. The Peace of Versailles medal is closely related to the famous Libertas Americana medal, Betts-615, and bears that inscription on the obverse. The reverse bears the legend COMMVNI CONSENSV (by common consent). This impressive Choice proof is deeply toned with reflective fields under original gray and iridescent patina. Faint hairlines and trivial contact marks hardly merit mention.
