Description

1793 S-4 Chain Cent, VG10
Periods, AMERICA

1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, Periods, S-4, B-5, R.3, VG10 PCGS. The 1793 Chain cent with periods after LIBERTY and the date is a desirable Guide Book variety from the first year of coinage at the Philadelphia Mint. Sheldon-4 is the sole Periods die marriage, and it also has the distinction of being the final Chain cent marriage. Most survivors are impaired in one way or another, but the present lot shows only a trio of slight rim bumps, at 3:30 on the obverse and at 1 and 9 o'clock on the reverse. LIBERTY and the chain are bold, and most of the date is clear. The reverse legends show variable sharpness but are fully readable. The steel-blue surfaces are attractive. The 1793 Chain cent is listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
