The Unique Proof
1846 1C Small Date, N-21, High R.8 as a Proof, PR64 Brown
PCGS. Grellman die state a. The obverse exhibits delicate die
cracks before a rim break appears over star 7. The PCGS population
for proof 1846 cents is challenging to interpret as some examples
are identified as 1846 cents, others as 1846 Small Date cents, and
more as 1846 Tall Date cents. The combined PCGS population includes
15 submissions graded PR63 RB (2), PR64 BN (5), PR64+ BN (1), PR65
BN (3), PR65+ BN (1), PR65 RB (2), and PR66 BN (1). However, just
one proof example is known from the N-21 die pair.A small carbon spot below IT of UNITED identifies this example that carries a century-old provenance dating to its appearance in Thomas L. Elder's June 1911 auction where it sold to Hillyer Ryder. As expected, a few other surface marks are evident on the lovely olive and blue-steel surfaces that retain hints of faded mint red.
