1955 Doubled Die Obverse Cent, MS64 Red
Choice Original Luster

1955 1C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, MS64 Red PCGS. The 1955 doubled die obverse is by far the most dramatic and highly sought-after mint error in the Lincoln cent series. When the error was noticed at the Mint, some examples were recovered from the hoppers and destroyed, but as many 24,000 pieces, per a formal inquiry by Bowers, were allowed to escape into circulation. Likely only a few thousand examples survive, mostly in circulated condition or within the Brown color category of Mint State. Full Red examples are genuinely elusive in any grade, and are rare finer than MS64. This Choice example is well-struck and devoid of major abrasions. The satiny surfaces showcase original coppery-red luster with a few trivial specks hardly of distraction. The eye appeal is excellent. PCGS reports 18 numerically finer full Red examples (6/15).
