1797 C-3b, B-3a Half Cent VG Details
Lettered Edge

1797 1/2 C Lettered Edge, Low Head, C-3b, B-3a, R.4 -- Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. VG Details. Manley Die State 3.0, equal to the earliest die state of C-3a, showing that the Lettered Edge coins were struck before the Plain Edge pieces, as Breen suggested in his Half Cent Encyclopedia. This piece is intriguing. There are a number of small dents, marks, and faint scratches, especially on the two-tone brown obverse. There is also a series of short, parallel grooves from the border into the bust, and another from the back of the head to the B in LIBERTY. The bidder should decide if those marks represent undertype, or merely additional random handling marks. A few similar marks appear on the reverse. Our EAC grade Good 6.
