Description
1795 Half Dime, MS63
Better V-2, LM-3 Variety
Rare Mint State Survivor, CAC
1795 H10C V-2, LM-3, R.5, MS63 PCGS. CAC. Flowing Hair half
dimes in Mint State are available on occasion to represent this
early half dime type. Ten 1795 varieties range from scarce to
extremely rare in Uncirculated condition. The most frequently seen
1795 varieties in high grades include the LM-8, 9, and 10. While
LM-2 is the rarest variety in high grade, LM-1 and LM-3 through
LM-7 are rare. This coin is the sole MS63 LM-3 example seen by
PCGS. A scarce variety in all grades, the LM-3 displays a prominent
die crack running from the edge through R of LIBERTY and nearly the
entire distance through Liberty's hair strands left of the ear to
the bottom hair strands. Not surprisingly, this variety is the only
use of the obverse die, which quickly failed. The reverse die is in
its first of three uses and proved resilient. Eight different
obverse dies and five reverse dies accomplished the ten known die
marriages and a reported 78,660-piece mintage for the year.Traditionally, the Eliasberg LM-3 example (described as MS63 in 1996) was long thought to be the finest for the variety, yet that coin is weakly struck at the lower-left stars and hair strands. This CAC-endorsed example is far sharper in those areas and is notably well-struck on the eagle's head, neck, breast, and legs. Amber-gold border toning surrounds a lustrous silver center on the obverse, while the reverse is lightly toned and equally attractive. There are no significant marks or abrasions on either side. A cluster of die lines between E and S of STATES are as struck in this die state. Early type collectors and half dime specialists alike will want to place a strong bid to acquire this remarkably attractive and well-produced 1795 half dime. PCGS Population (for the LM-3 variety): 1 in 63, 0 finer (2/25).
