Description

1652 Pine Tree Threepence, MS64
Noe-36, Middle Die State
Perhaps the Finest Pine Tree Threepence

1652 Pine Tree Threepence, No Pellets at Trunk, Noe-36, W-640, Salmon 2-B, R.4, MS64 NGC. 18.4 grains. A magnificent dove-gray near-Gem. The boldly struck surfaces are devoid of marks or spots. Mint clips affect the top of the HV, but all other letters are complete, although NEW is tight against the edge. Nicer than any of the four examples in the Ford (Part 12) auction. This is a middle die state piece that shows horizontal die lines at the top of the tree, but no obverse cud at 1:30. This piece that is slightly finer than the late die state Eric P. Newman example (November 2014) is also finer than any others that we have offered. The poorly centered Sydney F. Martin coin (Stack's Bowers, 8/2023) is PCGS graded MS63 and was called there the "probable finest known." We are unaware of any others in famous past collections that trump this Choice Mint State piece that is the finest existing Pine Tree threepence in our opinion. For all varieties, PCGS (6/25) has certified four Mint State Pine Tree threepence that grade MS63 (2), MS62, and MS61. NGC (6/25) has examined eight Mint State Pine Tree threepence that are graded MS64 (3), MS63 (3), and MS62 (2). Listed on page 9 of the 2026 Guide Book.
Ex: Richard Picker; Donald Groves Partrick/FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2015), lot 5614.
