Description

1856 Snow-3 Flying Eagle Cent, XF45
Collector-Grade Example

1856 1C Snow-3 XF45 PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. Snow-3 is the second most often seen 1856 Flying Eagle cent, behind the Snow-9 die pairing. Snow-3 is believed to have comprised the coins distributed to Congress in 1856 to sell lawmakers the idea of a small cent. The present Choice XF example displays deep chestnut-brown patina and light wear, with appreciable originality. Rick Snow notes that Snow-3 coins were apparently struck on a regular production press at normal speed, possibly to test the striking mass-coinage ramifications of using a nickel alloy.
