Description

1788 Massachusetts Cent, Ryder 16-M
High Condition Census, MS62 Brown

1788 1C Massachusetts Cent, Period MS62 Brown NGC. R. 16-M, W-6410, R.5. This rare variety was missing from the Norweb and Ford sales. The Taylor Collection had a VF coin and the American Numismatic Society has one graded XF. Only a few others are known, and the present piece is one of the three finest examples, although a side-by-side comparison will be necessary to determine the exact rank. A few traces of raised verdigris appear on the chestnut-brown surfaces of this lovely Massachusetts cent, showing dappled steel toning on both sides. Splashes of maroon patina are noted on the reverse of this lustrous piece.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
