Description

1802 JR-2 Dime, XF40
Outstanding Collector Coin, CAC

1802 10C JR-2, R.5, XF40 PCGS. CAC. Star 7 nearly touches the L and star 8 nearly touches the Y in LIBERTY. Die lines close both loops of the small 2 in the date. On the reverse, the final S of STATES is further from O in OF than any other 1802 variety, and T3 is over the left quarter of cloud 3. Field star 12 is well clear of the eagle's upper beak. Although rare, this is the second most-common of the four 1802 dime varieties, constituting about 30% of examples seen, according to Early United States Dimes 1796-1837. Moderate luster still graces the reflective surfaces, which are lightly coated with amber-gold, russet, and steel-gray patina. Die misalignment is responsible for weakness through the eagle's tail feathers and UNI, and on the obverse at BE. Both sides are free from any singular distractions, and the fields show only light chatter consistent with the grade. CAC endorsement sets this JR-2 dime apart from its peers regardless of variety. PCGS Population (all 1802 varieties combined): 8 in 40, 21 finer. CAC: 2 in 40, 4 finer (2/25).
