Description

1822 Quarter, VF35
B-2, Rare 25 Over 50 C Reverse
Choice Surfaces, Seldom Offered

1822 25C 25 Over 50C, B-2, FS-901, R.5, VF35 NGC. The early U.S. Mint made far more half dollar dies than quarter dies, which helps explain the 25 Over 50 C blunder. An absent-minded engraver began entering the legend on the reverse die as a half dollar, before the error was corrected. Nonetheless, the die was put into use for the rare 1822 Browning-2 variety. It then rested in the Mint workshop for several years, before it returned to service to strike the equally rare 1828 Browning-3. The present 1822 example displays deep gunmetal-gray, powder-blue, and butter-gold toning. No marks are consequential, and wear is relatively even, since only the first U in PLURIBUS is faint. NGC Census: 2 in 35, 7 finer (8/25).
