Description

Elusive 1874-CC Half Eagle

1874-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. The 1874-CC has the highest mintage (still a miniscule 21,198 pieces) and is one of the more commonly encountered of the Carson City Half Eagles from the 1870s. However, the small population of survivors are almost all well circulated, and legitimate AU pieces can be rightly categorized as extremely scarce. This example exhibits some reddish-orange patina and retains much of its original mint luster. The peripheral striking details are sharp, but there is a touch of softness at the center of the obverse and on the mintmark that is quite normal for the issue. We note a small grease spot at the top of the hair bun and the reverse die shows clash marks around the eagle, both above and to the lower right. Population: 7 in 55, 5 finer (12/04).
Ex: Superior (1/04), lot 886.
