1796 B-2 Quarter Dollar, Fine Details
Important Small Eagle Type
1796 25C B-2, R.3 -- Corroded, Improperly Cleaned -- NCS. Fine
Details. Tompkins Die State 2, lapped obverse. B-2 is slightly
more plentiful overall than B-1, although any example of this
one-year type and first-year denominational issue would be a
welcome addition to many collections. For many type collectors, the
1796 Small Eagle issue poses the greatest challenge. This piece has
Fine details, although moderate corrosion on each side prohibits a
numeric grade. Stone-gray and olive-tinged surfaces are slightly
glossed, suggestive of a light cleaning. Both sides have strong
detail and complete border dentils.
