1860 Seated Dollar, PR66+
Elegant Multicolor Patina, Ex: Simpson
1860 $1 PR66+ PCGS. CAC. OC-P1, R.2. Ex: Simpson. This was
the first year that the Mint began charging a 13 cent fee for proof
coinage. As a result, many of the 1,330 proof Seated dollars struck
in 1860 went unsold. Hundreds of coins were likely melted at the
close of the year, and only 525 proofs are believed to survive,
according to Seateddollarvarieties.com.This is an exceptionally attractive example, clearly high-end even for the lofty Premium Gem assessment. Blue, green, violet, gold, and rose toning uniformly covers each side. Contrast is minimal, but the elegant patina more than compensates. Population: 10 in 66 (1 in 66+), 1 finer. CAC: 3 in 66, 2 finer (8/22).
