Description

1815 B-1 Quarter, MS66
Rich, Attractive Toning and Excellent Luster

1815 25C B-1, R.1, MS66★ NGC. Tompkins Die State 4/2. The only dies. U.S. quarter production dropped to 89,235 pieces in 1815 -- a low output compared to the most recent quarter mintage in 1807, when 220,643 pieces were struck. No more quarters were made until 1815. Spanish American two reales pieces remained in circulation and were more familiar to the public, although many of those coins were well circulated and approaching attrition. Most of the silver bullion for 1815 quarters was provided by the Planter's Bank of New Orleans, which sent several kegs of Mexican 8 reales worth about $14,400 dollars to the Mint, requesting that the entire amount be struck into quarter dollars. Robert Julian notes additional deliveries of 1815 quarters were made to the Bank of Pennsylvania and to Jones, Firth & Co.

Gunmetal-blue toning hugs the margins of this Premium Gem example, transitioning into purple and golden-brown. The entire color palette is somewhat more extensive on the reverse. The lustrous surfaces are sharply struck despite die clashing and have been well cared for. NGC's important Star designation confirms the exceptional eye appeal of this Condition Census 1815 quarter. This MS66★ early quarter is sure to find a home in a high-grade collection. NGC Census: 3 in 66 (2 in 66 ), 2 finer (5/25).
