Description

Possibly Unique Silver Trial of the Gold Pattern Broad of 1662 Ex. Marvin Lessen

Charles II silver Pattern Broad 1662 MS62 NGC, cf. KM-Pn32 (for gold Pattern Broad), cf. N-2870 (same), Lessen, BNJ (British Numismatic Journal) 1995, type G, and plate 12, 15, (this coin). By Thomas Simon. A silver off-metal strike of the 1662 gold "Pattern" Broad of 20 Shillings, the latter of which is sometimes referred to as a Pattern due the experimental nature of the issue but SCBC suggests about 3,400 were issued, many survivors seemingly having accrued wear and/or handling. This special piece, struck in silver, is magnitudes of order more rare than the standard gold examples, perhaps even unique. The only modern record of a silver specimen having sold at auction was this very piece sold by Dix Noonan Web in 2021, who traced it's provenance back to the S. Tyssen Collection, which was dispersed by Leigh Sotheby in 1802.

The coin itself is beautiful, imbued with a moderate, lustrous cabinet patina, appropriate for a piece that been gracing the cabinets of notable collectors for centuries. A marvelously historic coin with impeccable provenance, we are thrilled to be able to play a part in this great rarity's history.
