Description

Articulate and Aesthetic Cap & Ray Pattern

Republic silver Proof Pattern 8 Reales 1843 Go-PM PR64 NGC, Guanajuato mint, cf. KM377.8 (circulation issue), Buttrey/Hubbard-Pn35. Another incredible Pattern from the Mexican Cap and Ray series, the only piece known to NGC and seemingly the only example to trade public hands in recent memory. As Buttrey/Hubbard note, this Pattern was manufactured at the Guanajuato mint under contract of the firm Manning and Marshall. The design mostly conforms to circulation strikes from this mint, but here the motifs are in higher relief and rendered in a finer style. A warm patina finds technicolor sparks across the surfaces, breathing life into the absurdly articulate motifs. The character of the eagle's feathers takes on particular strength in this regard. Beautiful and rare in every respect.
