Description

1807 O-105, T-4 Draped Bust Half Dollar, MS63
Tied for Fourth Finest, According to Tompkins
Generation 3.1 Green Label Holder

1807 50C Draped Bust, O-105, T-4, R.1, MS63 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 3/2. Stunning silver surfaces are highlighted with hints of rose and steel-blue, creating a wonderful "gray dirt" look that is highly desired by Bust half specialists. Some deeper hues of steel-blue are found on the reverse, particularly in the lower left quadrant as well as around STATES. Weakness almost evades detection since it does not effect any specific design element significantly, and no abrasions exist, save for a few above the reverse leaves. To top off the long list of superlatives for this lovely example, it is housed in a Generation 3.1 green label holder, with the type charmingly labeled "DRAPE BUST."

While the O-105 die marriage is the most available of the year, there are a plethora of interesting die states for the collector to pursue. The current example is Topmkins Die State 3/2, the fourth of eight for the year, which contains obverse clashing at the date and reverse clashing at OF as well as the crack joining all stars on the left, but the crack under the date still had not developed at the time this coin was struck.

Steve Tompkins' excellent 2015 book on Flowing Hair and Draped Bust Half Dollars lists the condition census for this die marriage as, "66, 65, 65, 64, 64, 63." Leaving room for the possibility of other MS63 examples, this piece is therefore tied for the fourth finest known of this die marriage, and is a beautiful survivor to occupy that spot.
