Description

Augustin I Iturbide gold 4 Escudos 1823 Mo-JM AU58 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM312, Fr-61. A prized one-year issue from the brief but highly collectible reign of Agustín de Iturbide. Heritage has encountered a significantly higher number of Iturbide's 8 Escudos than 4 Escudos over the past decade, the last of which was back in 2017. That is a considerable gap in availability and shows the importance of each occurrence of this type to collectors. The present near-Mint State specimen is finer than the examples generally encountered in the marketplace; in fact, a single MS60 is the only piece that stands between the current offering and "Top Pop" status (and MS60, though numerically superior, is not always preferred to an AU58 in the collecting world). This example exhibits the usual shortcomings in the central areas of each side: fine, vertical striations on Iturbide's face, and strike weakness on the reverse. Still, of tremendous quality for the type, displaying plenty of residual brilliance.
