Description

Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Pound ND (1594-1596) AU Details (Repaired) PCGS, Tower mint, Woolpack mm, Sixth issue, S-2534, N-2008, Schneider-799. 10.96gm. (woolpack) ELIZABETH • D' • G' • ANG' • FRA' • ET • HIB' • REGINA • (annulet stops), crowned and ruffled half-length bust of Elizabeth left / (woolpack) SCVTVM • FIDEI • PROTEGET • EAM • (annulet stops), crowned Tudor shield flanked by E-R. Almost never encountered this well-struck, a majestic Elizabethan offering of unparalleled production quality. This piece truly is outstanding, deemed 'repaired', although this is not immediately identifiable, with the only clear clue being a slightly modified color. It is its incredible sharpness, however, which first catches the eye, Elizabeth's portrait essentially perfect and its legends fully bold. Indeed, any collector familiar with this issue will likely double-take at this piece, its appearance so far removed from what one normally sees. This is one piece for which the 'details' grade should be somewhat irrelevant; its strike, flan and detail are all the finest that the cataloger has ever seen on an Elizabethan Pound. Clearly struck to an impeccable standard and of endless visual appeal, this Pound is doubtless to inspire very strong bidding.
