Description

1795 B-5, BB-27 Dollar, MS62
Three Leaves Reverse

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, B-5, BB-27, R.1, MS62 NGC. Bowers Die State IV. Flowing Hair varieties are identified by three main motif styles -- the obverse portrait, the eagle's feathering, and the wreath's leaves. The portraits are identified today as Head of 1794 (Portrait I) and the Head of 1795 (Portrait II). The Head of 1794 has a single bottom bust line and the Head of 1795 shows a doubled bust line (shoulder loop) below the back part of the neck, or above the 17 in the date. There are several other minor differences. Two eagle styles are identified as Eagle I (six tail feathers) and Eagle II (five tail feathers), with several subtle differences. The tail feathers count easily distinguishes these two styles. Perhaps the best-known characteristics for Flowing Hair dollars are the wreath types. These have either Two Leaves under each wing (Wreath I), or Three Leaves under each wing (Wreath II). The wreath styles are collected as separate Guide Book varieties.

Despite being the most-available variety among all Flowing Hair dollars, the B-5, BB-27 die marriage is in high demand from type collectors and early dollar specialists. It is always the logical "go-to variety" for the Three Leaves type, featuring the Head of 1795 and five tail feathers. This is by far the most plentiful Flowing Hair variety and is readily identified by a prominent diagonal bar in the upper-left obverse field on nearly all examples.

The present MS62 coin is struck from a mid-to-late die state, showing a delicate die crack at the upper reverse from the second T in STATES angling downward through the top leaf, eventually reaching the high point on the eagle's right (facing) wing. A lovely Mint State specimen, this Flowing Hair dollar displays glowing satin luster on both sides and lacks any visible adjustment marks that often appear on these early dollars. Isolated tiny die rust lumps are seen above the date and on Liberty's portrait. The moderately toned obverse displays pleasing reddish-gold and powder-blue toning over lustrous, silver-gray surfaces. Trivial surface marks are mostly visible in the open obverse fields and less so on the reverse, although there are no individually heavy marks on either side. This is a highly attractive Flowing Hair dollar from the second and final year of the design, representing the only variety that is comparatively available in Mint State grades. Census (all 1795 Flowing Hair varieties): 13 in 62, 29 finer (7/25).
