Description

1797 Capped Bust Right Eagle, MS62+ CAC
Scarce Large Eagle, BD-3 Variety
Condition Census Example

1797 $10 Large Eagle, BD-3, R.5, MS62+ PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b, with a die break below the second 7 in the date. The Philadelphia Mint switched over to the Large Eagle reverse on the eagle part way through the year in 1797, and a small production of 10,940 pieces of the new design was accomplished. Four die varieties are known for the date, one with the old Small Eagle reverse, and three with the new Large Eagle motif. This coin represents the BD-3 variety, with no star below the eagle's beak and a short, thin neck on the eagle. The obverse die was used to produce all the Large Eagle varieties of 1797, while the reverse was also used to strike both varieties of the 1798/7 eagle. Die evidence suggests the BD-3 variety of 1797 was struck after the two 1798/7 varieties, so the BD-3 was probably actually struck in 1798. The early Mint often continued to use coinage dies as long as they were serviceable, regardless of calendar year. The BD-3 is the most elusive of all the varieties for the date and John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 40 to 50 examples in all grades. The BD-3 dies were probably used to strike only 1,750 to 2,500 coins.

This Plus-graded MS62 example occupies the sixth position in the PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census for the issue and the coin is pictured in that section of the website. This specimen exhibits well-detailed design elements, with just a touch of the usual softness on Liberty's curls and the eagle's neck. Some light parallel die striations are evident in the obverse dentils and lower portrait. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly marked, with vibrant original mint luster on both sides. The overall presentation is most attractive and the high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. This lot represents an important opportunity for the advanced series specialist or Registry Set enthusiast. Population (all Large Eagle varieties): 15 in 62 (1 in 62+), 7 finer. CAC: 4 in 62, 3 finer (8/25).
