Description

1862 Double Eagle, XF45
Rare P-Mint No Motto Issue

1862 $20 XF45 NGC. The 1862 double eagle ranks among the rarest of all twenties struck during the Civil War and it is considered one of the rarest Type One Philadelphia Mint issues in the Liberty Head series. Only a few hundred pieces survive in all grades combined from the 92,098-piece mintage -- nor was there any large quantity seen among the shipwreck recoveries, with fewer than a dozen pieces among the S.S. Republic finds. This is a Choice XF example with original, orange-gold color and tiny, pinpoint abrasions. A single curved mark beneath stars 8 and 9 is minor in the context of the assigned grade. Eye appeal remains strong. Census: 24 in 45, 67 finer (7/23).(Registry values: N1793)
