Description

MS64 1915-S Five, One of the Finest at PCGS

1915-S $5 MS64 PCGS. The mintage of San Francisco Mint half eagles in 1915 plummeted almost 40% from the year-ago levels, to 164,000 pieces, and this issue is among the most elusive of the series in all grades, and even more so in Mint State. PCGS and NGC have each graded only nine pieces in MS64, with a single piece at NGC reaching the MS65 level (11/06). This satiny, lustrous piece offers two-toned, gorgeous surfaces with generous dollops of sunset-orange complementing tinges of hazel on the highpoints of each side. The strike is fairly well executed, with softness mostly limited to a few of the lower headdress feathers, and the reverse appears high-end for the grade. A nice piece, and aesthetically unlikely to be surpassed. Population: 9 in 64, 0 finer (11/06).
