Description

1879 Dime, Prooflike MS68
Repunched Date

1879 10C Repunched Date, F-104a, R.4, MS68 NGC. Fully prooflike fields and modest obverse contrast are the hallmarks of this remarkable 1879 Seated dime, struck from a retired proof die pair. Repunching of the 18 in the date confirms the variety. This high-end Superb Gem circulation strike lacks the razor-sharp definition of a proof, confirming its origin as occurring after the die pair was retired from proof coinage. Both sides show lovely ocean-blue, violet, and golden toning and are devoid of abrasions. Only a handful of pieces are known this fine, and none surpass this level. Census: 5 in 68, 0 finer (11/15).
