Description

1869-S Seated Liberty Quarter, MS66
Ex: Harlan P. Smith - Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.
Historic Finest-Known Example

1869-S 25C MS66 NGC. Briggs 1-A, Flynn-MPD-001. Ex: Eliasberg. Lustrous and glowing, the creamy-white surfaces are entirely brilliant and instantly recognizable as the incomparable Eliasberg 1869-S quarter. Numerous die cracks connect the peripheral obverse elements . The reverse die is unbroken but in a late die state, having been previously used to strike the 1866-S and 1867-S quarters. Small portions of the scroll bottom border no longer exist. Nevertheless, the strike is needle-sharp overall with each and every star displaying bold central details. Exceptional eye appeal appears on this conditionally scarce example of a low-mintage date. Whereas most survivors from the 76,000-piece mintage show extensive wear and have problems, this exemplary Premium Gem looks Mint-fresh despite the late die state. The current population reports by PCGS and NGC show only a dozen Mint State examples -- most in MS62 or lower grades, with this coin the finest-certified, a true "wonder coin."
