Single Highest Graded

1877 50C Half Dollar, Judd-1541, Pollock-1712, R.7, PR66 Brown NGC. 174.1 grains, per its 1998 catalog appearance. Liberty faces left with her hair tied in a bun at the base of the head. She wears a headband inscribed LIBERTY and ornamented with a star. The date is below the bust, and 13 stars are evenly spaced along the border. The reverse displays a flattened eagle with a square shield, an olive branch, and three arrows in the claws. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the border with the denomination HALF DOL. below. The design is credited to Anthony Paquet. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Saul Teichman's photo file shows just six or seven specimens, with one each in the Durham Museum (Byron Reed) and Connecticut State Library (Joseph Mitchelson). The present specimen is identified by small toning freckles east of star 4 and south of the second S in STATES. The rich ocean-blue toning is accompanied by butter-gold and rose-red accents. A delicate diagonal line is noted on Liberty's neck. NGC has certified only two examples; the other one as PR65 Red Cameo. PCGS has graded four pieces, all as PR65 with respective Brown, Red and Brown, Red, and Cameo designations (11/25).
