Description

1866-S Motto Eagle, AU55
Underrated S-Mint Rarity

1866-S $10 Motto AU55 NGC. The San Francisco Mint struck both No Motto and Motto versions of the eagles and double eagles in 1866, with the No Motto coins likely released into circulation before the Motto dies belatedly arrived. The 1866-S No Motto ten gets the lion's share of attention compared to the Motto tens, as does its more-famous twenty dollar sibling, but PCGS estimates only 60 to 80 Motto survivors, none of which are in Mint State. This Choice About Uncirculated example is suitable for any advanced eagle collection, with minimal abrasions or marks lovely orange-gold eye appeal. Glints of original mint luster remain on the well-defined surfaces. NGC reports only four numerically finer examples (all graded AU58). Census: 14 in 55, 4 finer (5/25).(Registry values: N4719)
