Description
1859-C Liberty Half Eagle, AU58
Elusive Issue Any Finer
1859-C $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 2. The 1859-C Liberty half eagle
is an elusive issue in AU58 condition, and finer examples are rare.
This attractive near-Mint specimen is sharply struck on the
obverse, but the central reverse is somewhat mushy, due to an
improperly annealed die (all 1859-C half eagles show this effect to
some degree). The pleasing orange-gold surfaces exhibit the
expected number of minor abrasions for the grade and only a trace
of wear shows on the high points of the design. Much original mint
luster remains intact. From a mintage of 31,847 pieces. Census: 34
in 58, 13 finer (7/18).(Registry values: P4)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VC, PCGS# 8281, Greysheet# 9029)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
