Remarkable Brutus Dynastic Aureus

Marcus Junius Brutus, Assassin of Caesar and Imperator (44-42 BC), with Pedanius Costa as Legate. AV aureus (19mm, 8.00 gm, 11h). NGC Choice Fine★ 5/5 - 4/5. Military mint traveling with Brutus and Cassius in western Asia Minor or northern Greece, late summer-autumn 42 BC. L•BRVTVS•PRIM•COS, bare head of Lucius Junius Brutus right, all within corona civica / M•BRVTVS IMP COSTA LEG, bare head of Marcus Junius Brutus right, all within corona civica. Crawford 506/1. Sydenham 1295. Junia 43, Pedania 2 and Servilia 30. Calicó 60 = Biaggi 41 (same dies). Bahrfeldt 64.6 = Cohen 16 = RBW 1777 (this coin). Extremely rare - less than ten pieces known.

This incredible issue displays the famous Brutus, assassin of Caesar, with his ancestor, Lucius Junius Brutus, the first Consul of the Republic. The portraits are enclosed by the corona civica - an honored bestowed for displaying patriotism by saving lives of their comrades in battle, or by rescuing the Republic itself from peril. Pedanius Costa was a lieutenant of Brutus in Asia, during the Civil War.
