Description

1872 Seated Dollar, PR65
CAC Endorsement, Original Toning

1872 $1 PR65 NGC. CAC. An unknown percentage of the 950 Seated dollar proofs struck in 1872 were melted. Today, somewhere around 600 specimens survive -- a fair estimate based on the number of submissions at NGC and PCGS. Most examples grade in the PR63 to PR64 range, and Gem proofs are decidedly rare.

This originally toned dollar offers lovely violet and cobalt-blue toning with dusky tan-gold color at the central obverse. Sharply struck, the coin shows dramatic die doubling on the banner and motto, most noticeable at IN GOD and, to a lesser extent, on the eagle's left (facing) wing and the denomination. Census: 17 in 65, 8 finer. CAC: 5 in 65, 0 finer (8/16).(Registry values: N4719)
