PONTIC KINGDOM. Mithradates VI Eupator, the Great (120-63 BC). AR tetradrachm (34mm, 16.73 gm, 12h). NGC MS ★ 5/5 - 4/5. Amisus (?), dated Pontic Era 208, month 8 (May, 90/89 BC). Diademed head of Mithradates right, long hair arranged with three loose curls down cheek and neck / BAΣΙΛEΩΣ MIΘPAΔATOY EYΠATOPOΣ, Pegasus standing on ground line to left, foreleg raised and head lowered preparing to drink, star within crescent to left, date HΣ and monogram to right, month numeral H (month) below; all within wreath of ivy leaves and flowers. De Callataÿ pg. 12, D47/R--.  Waddington Recueil General 15. SNG BM 1032 (same dies). Gulbenkian 938 and Pl. LXXVI (same dies). Apparently a rare date and die combination. With an extraordinarily powerful and well-modeled portrait of the great conqueror, deeply struck on a broad flan, with faint signs of doubling.
