Description

1851-D Five Dollar, AU58
Strong D, Fewer Than 200 Survivors

1851-D $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 30-V. The Strong D mintmark touches the stem, and the date is positioned far left. This Dahlonega issue is more elusive than collectors give it credit for. Of the 62,710 pieces struck, Winter estimates only 135 to 185 examples survive -- mostly in VF to XF condition. The peripheral elements are bold on each side, while the centers are typically soft. Partial luster glows from attractive medium orange-gold surfaces. Population: 7 in 58 (1 in 58+), 4 finer (4/19).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25U7, PCGS# 8248, Greysheet# 8998)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
