Description

1865 Twenty Dollar, MS64+
A Major Condition Census Rarity
Misplaced Digits in the Dentils

1865 $20 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Bowers Variety 2. NGC VP-002. Ex: D.L. Hansen Collection -- AWA Collection. This variety is unlisted in the Cherrypickers' Guide or Breen's Encyclopedia, but it clearly shows the tops of two errant digits in the dentils below the 65. Doug Winter says the variety "appears to be rare, and it should likely sell for a premium as it becomes better known." This well-struck No Motto twenty features medium yellow-gold color and frosty mint luster. The coin is impressively preserved with original surfaces. The 1865 is the final Type One Liberty Head double eagle struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The issue was elusive in Mint State until the recovery of the S.S. Republic, which foundered in a hurricane on October 25, 1865 off the coast of Georgia. Most of those coins are in NGC holders. The lustrous surfaces of this borderline Gem example display attractive orange and peach-gold hues that highlight a needle-sharp strike. Both sides show only minimal light marks for the grade and eye appeal is outstanding as confirmed by the PCGS Plus designation and CAC endorsement. PCGS Population: 2 in 64+, 2 finer. CAC: 22 in 64, 9 finer (6/25).(Registry values: N1)
