Description
1851 Humbert Fifty Dollar, XF45
887 Thous., Reeded Edge, K-6
1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous. XF45
NGC. K-6, Low R.5. The San Francisco Assay Office opened in
1851 and struck only fifty dollar octagonal slugs or "ingots" that
year. Initial varieties had the date on the edge, but by the end of
1851, the date had migrated to the obverse exergue. The date move
made the ingots more closely resemble U.S. coins, and that trend
would continue into future years. By 1853, the "ingots" were round,
had a standard 900 Thous. fineness, and were struck in ten and
twenty dollar denominations, like those from the official
Philadelphia and New Orleans mints. The present green-gold
representative displays wear on the eagle's legs and wingtips, but
some luster remains. The sole noticeable marks are an obverse
corner knock at 8 o'clock and a thin radial mark at the reverse
center. Listed on page 393 of the 2026 Guide Book.Ex: Long Beach / Summer FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2022), lot 3443.
