1838 Half Dollar in Silver
Judd-72, PR67 Cameo
Arguably Finest Certified
1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-72, Pollock-75, R.5, PR67 Cameo
NGC. Ex: The Peh Family Collection. The obverse depicts a
draped bust of Liberty facing left. Liberty wears a diadem and a
ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. The Liberty bust is often credited to
William Kneass, but the portrait style is closer to Christian
Gobrecht. On the reverse, an eagle with outstretched wings holds
four arrows in its right (facing) claw and an olive branch in its
left (facing). The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the
denomination HALF DOLLAR are around the periphery. Struck in silver
with a reeded edge and a nearly medallic alignment. This remarkable
Superb Gem is without a doubt the finest example of this pattern
variety that we have seen. The surfaces are deeply mirrored around
lustrous devices with exceptional golden-brown and navy-blue toning
throughout both sides. It is sharply struck and undeniably
attractive. PCGS has yet to certify any in grades above PR66, and
NGC shows only one other at the PR67 level, without a Cameo
designation. None are certified finer (7/25).Ex: San Francisco ANA Signature (Heritage, 7/2005), lot 7242; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 3700.
