Description

George II Crown 1743 MS64+ NGC, Royal mint, KM585.1, S-3688, ESC-124. Roses in angles. A simply superb specimen, with dark gray toning and blue iridescence highlighting the legends. The single highest graded specimen seen by NGC, with none at the MS64 or MS64+ level at PCGS and just one finer. As far as we have been able to conclude from our research, an example in such a high grade has never been sold at auction before. The one PCGS MS65 example graded was offered in our January 2013 with a reserve of $24,000 and failed to sale. In many respects, however, the market for British coins has gone up significantly in the last five years, so who knows if the current specimen will reach the same level that the MS65 could not. A wondrous specimen, and essentially as good as one can find for this elusive type.
Ex. St. James 9 (18 June 2008), lot 366; Noble Numismatics 53 (9 April 1997), lot 1155; previously privately purchased from Monetarium (Australia)
