Description

1848 Liberty Head Half Eagle, MS64
Lustrous and Attractive Grade Rarity

1848 $5 MS64 PCGS. The 1848 Liberty Head five dollar gold had an abundant mintage of 260,775 coins. In circulated grades, the issue is relatively common. However, in Mint State grades, the 1848 half eagle becomes rare, and at the Choice Uncirculated grade it is extremely rare. This near-Gem specimen has wonderful eye appeal with bright orange-gold toning on both sides. Thick frosty luster illuminates the fields and devices, swirling in cartwheels when rotated under a light. Minuscule contact marks can be observed with a loupe. Interesting light peripheral die cracks are seen on both sides, indicative of a late die state. Fully struck with excellent definition of design elements including Miss Liberty, the eagle, and the shield lines. An outstanding 1848 half eagle for the discriminating collector. PCGS Population: 3 in 64 (1 in 64+), 0 finer (11/25).(Registry values: P5)
