Description

1873 Closed 3 Gold Dollar, MS64
Rare Low-Mintage Type

1873 G$1 Closed 3 MS64 PCGS. Rare in near-Gem condition and seldom seen finer, the 1873 Closed 3 has a stated mintage of just 1,825 pieces, although the Bowers' reference suggests that figure is too low. The date shows the balls of 3 nearly touching (essentially fully closed) in clear contrast to the Open 3 variant. This Choice example displays gleaming rich-gold, semiprooflike surfaces and a sharp strike except at LIBERTY, which is almost entirely missing, as usual for the type. A few light abrasions are grade-consistent and of little note. Population: 8 in 64, 3 finer (10/19).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25DA, PCGS# 7574, Greysheet# 8036)
