Description

1885 Gold Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Elusive This Fine

1885 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. JD-1, R.4. High-end 1885 proof gold dollars are rare. 1,105 pieces were struck, although significantly fewer coins are known today. Only about 30 pieces were issued as part of complete proof sets in January 1885. The remainder of the mintage was either sold as individual coins or melted without ever leaving the Mint. The largest delivery of this issue was in the fourth quarter of the year, totaling 640 of the 1,105 pieces struck.

Although Walter Breen referenced four varieties of the 1885 proof gold dollar, John Dannreuther's recent comprehensive die variety study of proof gold identifies only two varieties. This piece represents JD-1, the slightly more plentiful of the two varieties, which shows less Longacre doubling on the letters in STATES. Mirrored fields glimmer around satiny, sharp devices, with yellow-gold and peach-orange hues intertwined across each side. The preservation and contrast are excellent, producing good eye appeal. Census: 12 in 66 Cameo (1 in 66 ), 12 finer; 6 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 9 finer (10/19).(Registry values: P1)
