Description

1838-C Half Eagle, HM-1, XF40
Sole Charlotte Issue of Type

1838-C $5 HM-1, High R.4, XF40 PCGS. The 1838-C half eagle is an important Charlotte Mint type coin, since there is no alternative to obtain the Classic half eagle design from the Southern facility. The mintage was a mere 17,179 pieces, yet two die pairs are known. HM-1 is slightly less rare than its alternative HM-2. The present example retains considerable lemon-gold luster within the motifs and about the stars and letters. The open fields and high points display electric-blue and orange toning. Careful inspection reveals a few marks, although only a diagonal line above the upper arrowhead merits mention.
