Description

1907 High Relief Double Eagle, AU50
Collector-Grade Wire Rim Example

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, AU50 PCGS. Active collector demand drives the market for High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagles at all grade levels. Few examples of this issue circulated extensively, but some coins were carried as pocket pieces due to the tremendous aesthetic appeal of the design. Augustus Saint-Gaudens had been commissioned by President Roosevelt to redesign all of the United States' coinage, but the eminent sculptor died in late 1907, after completing only the eagle and double eagle models. The High Relief double eagle of this issue represents the crowning achievement of Saint-Gaudens' distinguished carrier, and it is widely considered the most beautiful coin design ever prepared for a circulating U.S. coin.

This lightly worn piece displays satiny yellow-gold surfaces with remnants of luster in the deeply concave fields. Wear points are restricted to Liberty's breasts and knee, and the edge of the eagle's wing. A strong wire rim surrounds much of each side.
