Description

1818/5 25C B-1, R.2, AU55 NGC. Tompkins Die State 2/2, clashed. Of the 10 Browning 1818 quarter varieties, only B-1 and B-3 are overdates, sharing the same obverse die; nonetheless, the overdate feature is faint or nonexistent on B-3 coins due to the die state, making B-1 the only visible overdate for this issue. The fields and devices of this piece are generally slate-gray, but the margins offer deep fire-red, forest-green, and golden-brown toning. The curls and claws display light wear, but luster beckons from the plumage, and there are no reportable marks.
